Gun Talk Future of SVT-40s Domestically

Details

I was looking at SVT-40s earlier and I was surprised to see how many were produced (1.5m-1.6m) and how available they used to be in Canada. It seems like in Canada they used to go for a third or a quarter of what they were selling for here in the US. I understand the Russians could be picky about who they exported to, but there were still a decent bit of SVTs imported.

What concerns me though, is that to my understanding SVTs are now banned in Canada and are being destroyed. I could be wrong, but that's just what I've seen. To add fuel to the fire, if there were any in Ukraine they may have been fielded, destroyed, or sold off to other countries to afford more modern equipment (because they can't be sold to the US). All of this seems to add to the fact that there are dwindling numbers of SVTs in the world.

While I doubt the Russian arms and ammo bans will be lifted any time soon, it's unfortunate to see that even if legislation around importation did change the SVT would probably still be a rare and expensive piece.

And now in 2025, domestic numbers have decreased, if only slightly, from unconstitutional confiscations, theft, and accidental destruction. To add to the diminishing market, increased demand and scalping around Covid has driven the price way up, and even on a market that's generally cooling off a good rifle is still going to be $2200+. Even with recent trends, outside of maybe the cost of living going up or the housing market / AI bubble popping, I can't really see SVTs going down in price significantally.

At the end of the day it's just dissappointing that such a great gun likely won't see too much more life or availability in the US, and maybe even the world.

Ive seen a few sell for the $2-3k range stateside, probably worth it due to rarity and historic value, but too much for me just to mag dump into trash. The ammo isnt easy to find locally either, and most of what you can find is corrosive surplus many of which are from sketchy ass origins which arent known for good storage practices, or just old as crap and could be in any kind of condition. tula and wolf brand ammo are hard to find but at least theyre non corrosive and can be bought online (at a higher cost). As awesome as it would be to find one of these and hold it in my hands, I found a Romanian PSL at a local shop recently and didnt even have to pay much for it. I traded a couple of guns i got for cheap and only paid $500 for it. So at least after all these years I finally have a semi auto 7.62x54r. My first rifle was a 1942 Mosin Nagant, back in the day when buds had them with all the accessories for $99. Its a nice round and I still feel the bruise that metal buttplate gave me the first time I shot it lol.

As a collectors piece, mine hangs on the wall and looks pretty. The gas settings are a bitch to deal with. Picky little asshole for sure, but when it runs it runs. I paid 2500 for a Tula 1940 svt plus 2 mags and some extras, which even the real mags are expensive but do have that cool history.

The prices of them have jumped significantly. Brick and mortar stores charging 3-5k and individuals selling for around the 2-3. I’ve watched the prices while trying to buy mine and I was looking around for a couple months, time and time again I would see prices spike, then cool off. I think right now they have leveled off and will stay that way for a while… unless ivandrago gets ahold of a shit load of them, then you’re screwed lol.

If it’s possible, take a crack at the ones on gunbroker. 2k is worth an svt and magazine. It super sucks that more will be destroyed with communist Canada attempting to make people either turn them in or make them non functioning.
