Gun Talk Refinished 1921 Hex Mosin

Details

Bought this 1921 hex Mosin from a guy on here a few months back, finish was in terrible condition, and it was already a post war re-finish, so I decided to refinish it myself. It turned out really good! I uses mahogany 225 and 5 coats of tung oil, buffing with 0000 steel wool in between each coat. It doesn't look exactly like the original finish, definitely darker and more shiny, but I think it turned out pretty good! Way better than how it was when I got it.

Looks fantastic! I've got a 1925 and this is giving me the motivation to do the same. Did you refinish the receiver at all?

No sir, just the wood. Make sure to completely strip the rifle beforehand, don't start staining until its totally dry. It took mine about a day to dry after using varnish remover, washing off with warm water, letting dry and then sanding. Also I did this with a friend and he did his 1943 mosin, he applied WAYYY too much stain and it turned out to be damn near black, when it comes to staining, all you need is one coat, don't go over it with the brush multiple times like my friend did lol

Also I should mention, if you have a good original finish on your gun you are diminishing the value by doing so, mine was already refinished and it was chipping like crazy
